The new modular filter plant at Kirklees Building Services joinery workshop.

LATEST SPEC FOR KIRKLEES COUNCIL DUST PLANT

Dust Control Systems have recently installed a replacement dust extraction system at Kirklees Council’s Building Services joinery workshop. And, like many other small to medium joinery projects, the new installation features the latest design of modular filter.

Kirklees Council serves Batley, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Holmfirth and other districts of West Yorkshire. Its Building Services section is responsible for repairs, maintenance and refurbishment of council homes and schools. The workshop has a team of skilled craftsmen who operate an assortment of classical woodworking machinery used in the manufacture of all kinds of purpose-made joinery, including windows, stairs, doors and casements.

Mindful of changing legislation, Kirklees Building Services decided to replace their existing extraction plant with a modern system that would fully comply with the latest ATEX European Directive for explosive dust. Dust Control Systems, who have supplied dust control plant to the council in the past (and are currently contracted to inspect and service their extraction equipment), were invited, along with competing suppliers, to put forward proposals for a new extraction system.

DCS was successful with their proposal for an externally located, high-efficiency modular filter, designed to handle an airflow capacity of 15,000m3/hr. The installation includes a low-noise main extraction fan and ducting, complete with a blast gate damper system that enables air volume to be switched from machine to machine.

The compact filter is fitted with high-performance polyester filter bags, which cope efficiently with varying loads of wood dust and chips. Collected waste is discharged ‘pressure-free’ into a container housed beneath the filter.
