DCS SHUTS THE DOOR ON GRP DUST

A recent contract undertaken by extraction specialists Dust Control Systems required a dust plant installation that would deal effectively with dust from the machining of fibreglass-faced door blanks.

Distinction Doors Ltd, based in Barnsley, is a major stockist of high quality GRP entrance doors which replicate the appearance of traditional hardwood doors. Since Distinction Doors was formed in 2005 it has demonstrated spectacular growth and, to keep pace with demand for its doors, the company has recently re-located to a large modern facility. Its new home is a 40,000 sq ft warehouse, just off junction 36 of the M1, which has a stockholding of 30,000 door blanks and is equipped and staffed to pick and distribute doors across the UK.

A key element in the company’s success has been its willingness to provide support to new entrants into the composite door market. The support system has been developed to assist door fabricators with transition issues particularly regarding changes in production techniques and, to this end, a major service offered to these customers is the CNC machining of door blanks. To coincide with the move to new premises, the company decided to invest in new machining and finishing equipment, installing an SCM Record 100AL machining centre and an automatic edgebander. The hi-tech, tandem loading CNC machining centre is capable of sizing doors and machining glazing and letter plate apertures, along with hinge and lock detail, in just a few minutes.

Dust Control Systems was called in to evaluate the extraction needs and to put forward proposals to effectively deal with dust from the processes. DCS’s Chris Oldfield says: “High speed machining of the door blanks, which comprise fibreglass moulded outer skin and polyurethane insulating core, generates an extremely fine dust. As well as specifying a filter that was up to the task, it was of equal importance that we accurately determined an optimum air flow velocity for the system.” The filter proposed and installed by DCS is a high-efficiency modular filter unit, complete with high specification filter bag which enables the filter to handle higher dust loads; ensuring effective deep filtering and very low pressure loss/energy consumption. The shape of the bag also facilitates easy and efficient cleaning due mainly to the built-in anti-static bonding.

The externally located filter plant is programmed for continuous cleaning during use and collected waste is transferred from the filter’s rotary valve by a return loop, fan-assisted waste conveying system, to a waste collection skip. David Gomersall, general manager at Distinction Doors, says: “We were impressed with the way DCS handled every aspect of the contract .The system is extremely neat and tidy, is relatively quiet in operation and does a good job keeping the workshop clean.”
